1. Hydration
Winter can be especially harsh on skin. The air is cooler and dryer. This environmental change can affect skin which needs water for optimal functioning. A lack of water in the skin results in dry, tight, itchy, and flaky skin. This also results in a lack of smoothness and luminous appearance. Because dry skin loses its pliable characteristics, it may crack which can lead to an increased chance of infections. Research indicates seasonal differences in the lipid (i.e. skin oils) with a depletion in winter compared to spring and summer (Rogers, et al., 1996). This lack of lipids can lead to an increase in trans epidermal water loss (TEWL). Therefore, using a moisturiser is vital during this period and for many increasing the level of hydration may be needed.
2. Exfoliation
Exfoliation removes the dead skin cells from the uppermost layers of the skin using either mechanical factors or chemical ingredients. Chemical ingredients, such as hydroxy acids, retinol and enzymes, can break down the bonds that keep the outermost skin cells on the surface, while mechanical factors use abrasives to rub or brush off the external skin cells. This can be done through abrasive particles (like walnut shells or marine diatoms) or even textures (wash cloth, brush, lufra, silicone topographies.) that gently remove the cells to reveal more luminous skin. Care should be taken to ensure over exfoliation does not take place as this can compromise the skin.
3. Sun Protection:
It also is vital to ensure the skin is adequately protected in winter from the sun’s rays. Using sun protection daily is the best thing anyone can do for her skin to keep it looking its best and prevent early signs of ageing from occurring.
4. Skin Products
One way to easily obtain exfoliation and other skin benefits is the ageLOC LumiSpa system.
